Tencent Wuhan R&D Center receives the National Quality Engineering Award

At the 2019 National Quality Engineering Awards conference, held on 8 December at Beijing's China National Convention Center, Tencent Wuhan R&D Center received the 2018–2019 National Quality Engineering Award. It followed GSIN's award for Huizhou Central Stadium in 2011.

Located beside Tangxun Lake in Jiangxia, Wuhan, Hubei, the reclining-penguin-shaped building has approximately 73,000 m² of floor area, five above-ground storeys and two basement levels, a height of about 30 m and a folded roof. This historical article records 4,170 tonnes of steel, completion in August 2015 and the 2015 China Construction Steel Structure Gold Award.

The structure combines a steel-reinforced concrete frame with roof trusses, suspended floors and local cantilevered steelwork. Hanger columns transfer suspended-floor loads through the roof trusses to the main structure.

The roof has 12 planar single-layer trusses: eight primary and four secondary, using box and welded H sections. The lower chord is at 22.2 m and the upper chord follows the roof profile. The maximum main-truss cantilever is 20 m; secondary spans reach 42.5 m; the heaviest individual truss is 42 tonnes. Floors three to five hang from the main roof trusses.
