On 10 January 2020, the final main truss of the Jinshawan International Hotel's 32 m cantilevered roof was installed, witnessed by teams from China Construction First Group, GSIN and Shenzhen Keyu Engineering Consultants.
The Jinshawan International Park project is on the waterfront in Dapeng New District, Shenzhen. Its performing arts center evokes layered feathers of a roc, while the hotel roof represents golden wings. The project uses 2,320 tonnes of steel; the performing arts roof and hotel cantilever were key construction challenges.
The hotel's tubular-truss roof has an approximately 20 m supported section and a 32 m cantilever, 15 support points and a width of 18.25 m. Five main and 16 secondary trusses are stabilized by horizontal ties at upper- and lower-chord levels. The cantilever stands 27.3 m above ground, making lifting, welding and coating demanding high-level operations. Dry winter conditions also required careful fire control, and intersecting tubular welds demanded precise installation.
Temporary supports were placed on the east tower's concrete structure beneath the five main cantilever trusses. A 225-tonne crawler crane in tower configuration combined sectional lifts with individual assembly. After weld testing, synchronized staged release unloaded the structure, followed by high-level corrosion and fire protection coating from articulated platforms. The specialist safety plan passed expert review on 30 December 2019.
The performing arts roof comprises six leaves and combines intersecting, cast-steel, welded-ball, pin, welded and bolted joints with multi-slope tubular trusses, unusual tree-shaped tubes, single-layer solid-web grids and portal frames. In-situ sectional lifting and individual assembly were selected to suit tower cranes and site conditions. Repeated construction simulations optimized unloading and support-removal sequences.
Numerous cast-steel nodes with varied pipe directions required a dedicated acceptance plan. Connections to ordinary steel also required a dissimilar-metal welding procedure qualification, witnessed by relevant personnel, providing experience for similar projects.
