Guangzhou New China Life Insurance Tower wins the Yuegang Award

Guangzhou New China Life Insurance Tower received the 16th Guangdong Steel Structure Gold Award, or Yuegang Award, in the construction category. The original report records September 2024. Organized by the Guangdong Steel Structure Association, the award recognizes high-quality steel construction in the province.

The Grade A office tower is 180 m high, with 41 above-ground storeys including a six-storey podium and four basement levels. It occupies 8,423 m², with a total floor area of 133,825.8 m²: 105,319.9 m² above ground and 28,505.9 m² below. The main structure combines a concrete core with an outer steel frame.

Its 47.4 m × 47.4 m steel frame includes 16 outer box columns tapering upwards and three H columns inside the core. Steel floor beams on levels 6–42 connect the core to the columns. Q355B steelwork totals approximately 8,500 tonnes, with around 60,000 m² of decking and 76,000 m² of fire-protection coating.

Limited laydown space and crane coverage required tightly controlled delivery sequences, optimized site layout and access routes. Thick-plate welding, including 45 mm column plates, required wind protection, controlled interpass temperatures, preheating and postheating, deformation control, experienced welders, symmetric CO₂-shielded welding and ultrasonic testing.

The team coordinated erection sequences with civil engineers, used temporary guy-wire restraints and monitored column displacement to maintain installation accuracy. GSIN welcomed the award as recognition of project quality and its steel-construction capabilities.
